In a recent ranking published by WalletHub, Minnesota earned second place in a 2019 list of the best states to live in.1 The state was just behind Massachusetts and ahead of New Hampshire.
Of the top five states, which also included New Jersey and Colorado, Minnesota was the only state from the Midwest. Still, this win shouldn’t be so surprising considering Minnesota’s quality of life has consistently been high and has been recognized by a number of quality-of-life rankings similar to this one.
Why Is Minnesota One of The Best States to Live In?
According to WalletHub, this list of the best American states to live in were based on “51 key indicators of livability.” These indicators ranged from crime rates and housing costs to income growth and poverty levels.
The study also looked at statistics that aren’t often considered for these kinds of lists. From education access, homeownership rates and weekly work hours to the percentage of insured residents and even the number of restaurants per capita. All the indicators were grouped into 5 major categories – “Affordability,” “Economy,” “Education & Health,” “Quality of Life,” and “Safety.”

- Quality of Life – 10
- Safety – 12
