INSURANCE OPTIONS

When you hire even the best moving company, USA Family Moving, that means you are trusting strangers to handle your most precious belongings. The moving industry does not like to admit it, but moving fails happen more often than you’d think. Don’t get caught in a tricky situation because you weren’t covered by moving insurance. At USA Family Moving, our team of professional movers goes above the call of duty, which is why we have compiled the following information to make sure you know what insurance options are available to you for your next move.

Every moving company will tell you they are licensed and insured. But this just means that they have complied with Department of Transportation regulations to be an operating moving company. The level of insurance coverage that is mandated by the DOT is only a $.60 per pound liability rate. This is offered to you at no additional charge thanks to the Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration. But take note: this is NOT full value replacement insurance.

Call your movers and ask them about the different insurance options they offer. Do they have full coverage options? Full coverage is usually the safest option because if anything is damaged during the move, you don’t have to pay out of pocket.

Read the following coverage options carefully to make sure you are aware of what coverage is available to you. The coverage you choose will apply to any claim for a damaged item.

Standard $.60 Valuation

This level of moving insurance is provided to all customers, free of charge by the Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration. With this level, you are covered up to $.60 per pound for damaged or missing items. It is important to note that this amount is based on weight, not the value of the item. For something expensive that doesn’t weigh much, let’s say an Apple laptop, the price per weight is not going to be enough to cover the expenses; the same concept may apply to jewelry.

Full Coverage

Many moving companies in the United States, including our veteran-owned moving company here at USA Family Moving, work with third-party insurance carriers to offer full-coverage protection for your items. Every third-party insurance carrier has their own policies and rules, so make sure to call us to discuss options and what might work best for you. Note that these policies may take a couple days to go into effect, so don’t wait until the day before your move.

Homeowner’s Insurance

In some cases, your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance can offer coverage for moving above the standard $.60 per pound rate. You may be charged a fee of $50-100 from your insurance carrier to apply for a rider to cover your belongings during the move. Give your insurance company a call to see if this option applies to you well before your move, as they will need information from us to make the proper coverage possible.

Whatever option you choose, just make sure you thoroughly review your policy and what is applicable for a claim. Our team at USA Family Moving strives to maintain its reputation as one of the best moving companies in the USA by getting your items to your new home safe and sound. Just in case something does go wrong, make sure to weigh all your insurance options to best be prepared. Contact us today for more information.
