Get Your Finances Ready for a Move

We know that moving is not cheap. Our Twin Cities full-service movers are here to help you create the most financially savvy moving plan possible. Whether you are moving across town or across the country, our team at USA Family Moving can help ensure your move is easy and hassle-free. It’s important to understand your budget and be cost conscious during the process. Here are some tips from our Minnesota moving company on how to stay on top of your financials before, during and after your next move.

Organize and Sort Your Important Documents

Make sure your financial documents and other important papers are collected and organized before you start planning your move. This will not only help you better understand your budget, but also you’re your important documents organized in your new home. It’s always easier to do in your soon to be old home than when you are trying to enjoy your new one.

Track Your Finances- Recurring and One-Time Expenses

If you know you are moving at the end of the year or in a couple months, start creating a financial plan and tracking where you spend your money. From one-time expenses to recurring monthly payments, applications like can help you stay on top of your monthly earnings and expenses. This will help you save up for the big move.

Pay Your Bills Now

Get your old bills or outstanding fees for utilities and other items paid before your move. It will help your credit score for when you try and get insurance or a better deal on a mortgage for your new home. It also gives you a better understanding of your budget.

Measure Your Furniture

Before you go through the process of protecting, lifting, loading and transporting your furniture to your new home, measure it to make sure it will fit in it. It would be a huge waste of money to get the furniture to your new home only to find out that it’s not going to fit and now you have to buy a new one. Don’t pay twice! Check it out and prepare so that you save in the long run.

Donate or Sell Some of Your Clutter

Don’t waste money packing and lugging items to your new home that you no longer want or need. Take a couple weeks to clean out your house. Separate your items into piles: items you want to keep, items to sell or donate and items to throw away. Then host a yard sale with those items you don’t want any more or donate them to charity. The less stuff you have in your home, the less expensive it will be to move it to your new one.

Send Your Books Through USPS

If you have a large book collection, consider send those items to your new home with USPS. The Post Office offers flat rate boxes ranging from $11-19 per box. Instead of adding all that weight to your movers tally and paying for it there, send them via the post office and pay a much smaller fee.

Cancel Your Utilities at the Right Time

Many utility companies won’t prorate you if you cancel your services before the end of a service month. Make sure you check when your next bill is due and when your month ends before you cancel in the middle of the month. If your cable renews a couple days before your move, cancel it to avoid paying for the next month without using it. And remember to turn on the utilities at your new home on moving day so you aren’t paying for two homes at once.
