How to Declutter Your Home

There is no better time to clean out and declutter your home then when you are preparing for a move. Take advantage of the opportunity to get rid of all the stuff taking up space in your home. Our experts at USA Family Moving are here to help you make the most of this process. Our Twin Cities full-service movers have put together the most efficient ways to declutter your home.

Create Categories for Your Items

Don’t procrastinate. Cleaning out your home will take time. Make sure you give yourself at least a week to go through each room of your home and separate your belongings into three categories: keep, donate/sell, throw away. Be stingy. The best rule of thumb for purging your items is to ask yourself the question: Have you used it within the last year?

Whether you are going through clothing, household items, collections, etc., make sure you ask yourself how much use you really get out of it. Another good method- if you are unsure about whether to give an item away or not, you probably don’t need it. You’ll have a strong feeling about items that you want to keep. Any uncertainty, get rid of it.

Donate or Sell Items You Don’t Need

If there are items you don’t want anymore that are in good quality and reusable, why not sell them at a yard sale? You could make a few extra bucks while cleaning out your house. If a yard sale sounds like too much work, or you’d rather donate them, take your items to donation centers like Goodwill, Salvation Army or other local charities that could use your items. You can get a tax write-off and you’ll feel good knowing your items will help those in need.

Don’t Go Out and Replace Items

You’ve cleaned out your closets, drawers and other storage spaces and your home looks great! You have so much more room and things are a lot more organized. Be careful not to fall into the trap of filling that empty space back up. Those extra hangers in your closet can tempt you to go shopping and fill them with clothes. Remember all the work you did to clean out those closets- it should help you keep the desire to fill up that empty space at bay.

Make It a Game

Cleaning out your home doesn’t have to be a dreadful process. Make a game out of it for the whole family. The 12-12-12 challenge is great if you have young kids. Everyone comes together to locate 12 items to throw away, 12 items to give away/sell and 12 items to return to their proper place in your home. Make it a competition, whoever gets the most items or gets 12 items in each category the fastest gets to pick where you go to dinner or gets to pick the movie.

The most important thing is that you efficiently declutter your home and keep it organized. Less stuff means a cheaper move and a happier home. Count on our Twin Cities full-service movers at USA Family Moving for helpful tips, ideas and advice for all your moving and packing needs.
