TOP TEN MOVING TIPS
Moving is a frustrating and complex process, but it doesn’t have to be a negative one. At Established Moving & Storage, we work hard to make sure you have an easy and stress free move every time. Here are our team’s top tips for moving.
1. Plan Ahead
Don’t wait too long to get preparations going. Create a moving schedule and use our moving checklist to stay on task. Moving is a big deal and there is a lot to keep track of. Don’t wait until the last minute.
2. Don’t Rush It
Moving day is not a quick process so don’t make a lot of plans for that day. Your move might take longer than you planned for any number of reasons. Plus, between getting everything ready for the move, then unpacking and getting settled at your new place, you’ll be exhausted.
3. Declutter
Moving is the perfect time to do a clean sweep of your home. Go through each room and create different piles of items you want to either throw out or give away. You don’t want to move into your new home with a ton of clutter. Host a yard sale to make some extra cash or donate items to local charities. You’ll save money when you call your movers too- less stuff means less boxes to move!
4. Do Your Research
The most important piece of moving advice that any expert moving company in Minneapolis and St. Paul can give you is to do extensive research on the moving companies you are looking to hire. You do not want to put yourself in a moving fail situation or have your items damaged during a move because you have unprofessional or inexperienced movers. USA Family Moving is a family-owned and operated moving company servicing Minneapolis and St. Paul. Our sole mission is to ensure that you have the best possible moving experience. With over 20 years of moving experience under our belts, our family promises you a great move!
5. Don’t Wait Too Long to Pack
It’s important not to procrastinate on packing. We know it is not enjoyable, but the longer you wait the worse it will be. Start small by packing items that you don’t use often or seasonal items that you aren’t using right now. Go room-by-room and start taking down decorations, wall art, etc. Allowing yourself enough time to pack also helps make sure your items are safe and secure for the move. Don’t want to deal with packing? Hire us to do it for you. Our Minneapolis movers are expert packers and we’ll make sure we offer you an affordable rate.
6. Get Everything in Writing
No matter what movers you use, make sure you get everything in writing. It can be sent via email or handed to you as a printed receipt, but you need to know exactly what you are being charged for. Understand the policies and requirements you are complying with by signing to avoid any unnecessary confusion or surprises. If you have any questions about what you receive, call right away to avoid any misunderstandings.
7. Understand Your Insurance and Payment Policies
Insurance and payment are two extremely important parts of the move. Is there a non-refundable deposit required? What about a moving day change or cancellation policy? What kind of insurance options does the mover provide? Make sure you have the answers to these questions before the job starts.
8. Change your Address
Alert all the companies that use your address for billing purposes that you are moving. The post office has a change of address form you can fill out on their website to help with your mail delivery. Your other memberships and subscriptions will likely need you to call or login to your account to change your address and keep receiving information.
9. Make Aesthetic Changes to Your New Home Before Moving In
It is way easier to paint and make small home improvements before you add furniture and other belongings into the mix. If you can get access to your new home before moving day, make sure that honey-do list is checked off prior to moving in all your stuff.
10. Be There on Moving Day
Your movers will likely have questions for you on moving day, need to receive payment, and have some forms signed. Make the process easier by being there in person with your movers to answer questions. This also ensures your furniture is exactly where you want it in your new home.
